Before leaving
The Cote d’Azur turned out to be my first destination in the new year. I bought the tickets right after the new year, spontaneously I chose the place I always wanted to go to, as there were tickets at the end of February for PLN 80 return (annual subscription costs PLN 180 in the Wizzair Discount Club offer), I bought them right away. However, two weeks before departure, my mother decided to join and here tickets already cost PLN 280, also including a discount. I waited practically until the last moment with booking the accommodation, because I did not know whether I would go alone or with someone, in the end it was an Airbnb apartment in Nice (near Avenue Jean Medecin), we paid PLN 510 for 3 nights.
Trip
The trip itself was quite short and diverse, so this time I decided to describe each day to you in turn, and at the end I will write my favorites as for a place to visit.
The flight from Krakow to Nice takes about 2 hours. We were flying on a Sunday evening flight, so we didn’t arrive there until around 9:30 PM. Nice and the entire azure coast have excellent public and intercity communication. We got from the airport to our apartment by tram no. 2, the cost of one trip is 1.5 €, and the journey to the center takes about 35-40 minutes.
Transport: there is a ticket similar to the T10 in Barcelona, it is a ticket for 10 journeys in Nice for 10 €, can be used by more than one person, in which case the bus / tram / train must validate the ticket as many times as there are use it. When it comes to connections outside Nice, the cost of one journey is 1.5 €. If you ask for the Azur Ticket when you get to Nice, you will be able to use it to travel by tram or bus within the city.
Day no. 1
In the morning we set off from the Boyer stop, by bus no. 82 (about 30 minutes away) to Eze. It is a lovely village located at the top of a small hill. Visiting the town takes about 1-1.5 hours.
Then, following the Nietzsche path, which starts at the foot of the city, we walked to the coast, from where we caught the 100 bus to Menton. Here, I would like to warn you immediately to turn off cellular data on your phone, because on the way to Menton we pass through Monaco, the 8-minute journey cost me 270 PLN, even though I did not use the phone at that time (this is the price for 7MB, fortunately I had a limit set for this amount).
In February, Menton hosts the lemon and orange festival that the city is famous for. For 12 € per person, you can enter the area where there are figures made of these fruits, you can also buy lemon trees, local honey and lemons there.
In addition to this annual attraction, all over the city, especially around the port, there are wonderful colorful houses and narrow streets between them. Near the port there is also the church of St. Michael the Archangel. There is a path near the church that leads to the viewpoint above the port.
After Menton we went to Monaco, also by bus number 100. We got off right next to the casino, unfortunately there was a renovation in front of it, and we decided not to go inside (admission costs 18 €). However, we saw the casino from the outside with a garden and alleys behind it. Then, along the sea, along a path overlooking the ports, we went towards the prince’s palace, from where we admired the sunset. We went to the bus no. 100 on the other side of the castle hill to see the second port up close.
I believe that one day for these three cities is ideal if we plan to see them more from the „outside”. However, if you plan to enter one of the museums in Monaco or Menton, or stay for a few rounds at the casino, I would recommend dividing these trips into two days, the first Eze and Menton, and visiting Monaco separately. Of course, it all depends on what time you have and what you care about the most.
Day no. 2
In the morning we took a walk to the promenade and from there we took bus no.12 to the airport (you can also use tram no.2). There we changed to bus number 200 towards Cannes. The journey takes about 40 minutes and the bus drops us off close to the city center.
First, we visited Marché provencal, an open-air market where you can buy spices, honey, dairy products, fruit and vegetables. You can also buy on the spot for € 2, chickpea pancakes served with pepper and salt or any other seasoning of your choice.
From there we went to the Picasso museum, it is worth knowing that between 12 and 2 pm the museum has a break in its operation, but if we start visiting at 11 am and want to return after 2 pm, we do not have to buy tickets again (the price for adults is 6 €, for children, students and seniors the cost is € 3). The museum’s exhibition is quite extensive, the first floor is home to exhibitions by other artists with a style similar to Picasso. The second floor is entirely devoted to the work of Picasso and pictures of him during his work.
After the museum we headed to Fort Carre, where for € 3 for adults and € 1.5 for students, we will be shown around the fort with scenes from the movie „Never say never again”. At the foot of the fort, the guide showed us a bus stop, where a free bus will take us back to the city center.
From there, we made our way to the next stop on Line 2, which goes to Eden Roc, from which you can embark on a trip along the Le Sentier du Littoral route, along the shore, adjacent to sumptuous villas. The route takes about 1.5 hours and is one of the most beautiful trips near the city that I have been on during my travels. HIGHLY RECOMMEND to visit this place if you are in Antibes !!
Day no. 3
We left Nice for the last day. We started with the Marc Chagall museum (price per adult is € 10, while EU students have free admission), a beautiful museum with many works by this outstanding artist.
From there we went to the city center, where the carnival parade was taking place, which frustrated our plans a bit as some of the streets and parks that we wanted to visit were closed. However, we managed to visit the Promenade des Anglais, going through the entire city earlier, then we went along the beach to the castle hill.
On its top there is a beautiful artificial waterfall and a viewpoint. We descended from it on the other side of the hill towards another port, and then returned to the city center for lunch.
We spent the rest of the day wandering around the old part of town and headed to the airport, where the plane took us home.
The Cote d’Azur offers many more beautiful landscapes than I was able to see, I hope I will be back there to visit them. However, for the moment I can recommend this area both in terms of active sightseeing / walks as well as a purely leisure trip, but in this case it is better to go there around the holiday area so that the weather does not disappoint us.
